Wireless Mic & Projector Rental for Monty Python’s Spamalot

Starting point: Most productions of Monty Python’s Spamalot need 14 to 16 wireless channels. Our starting point is the Standard 16-channel system, which covers the knights, the Lady of the Lake and the featured roles. Spamalot School Edition uses a similar plan.
This is our suggested starting configuration, not a requirement of the show or its licensor. Your count depends on your edition, your staging and your crew.
How we got to 16 channels
Spamalot has a mid-size principal cast in which most actors play several roles. A typical plan:
-
Principals (9): King Arthur, the Lady of the Lake, Patsy, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad, Sir Bedevere, Not Dead Fred, Prince Herbert
-
Featured roles (3 to 5): the Historian, the French Taunter, the Black Knight, Tim the Enchanter, the Knights Who Say Ni
Cover the Laker Girls and ensemble with area mics.
This count assumes: every listed role has its own transmitter; your venue covers big ensemble numbers with area or choir mics; and there are no pack swaps. Doubling roles or swapping packs lowers the count. Miking ensemble members individually raises it.
Doubling, pack swaps and your sound operator
Two actors can share a transmitter only if they are never on stage at the same time and a crew member has time offstage to move the pack, re-fit the mic and check it. Every channel also needs attention at the mixer: one operator following a marked script can run a show this size, but bring them into rehearsals before tech week.

Mic notes for Spamalot
-
Helmets and armor: helmets block hairline mics; earsets placed before the helmet work best.
-
Many roles per actor: most actors double; label channels by actor, not by role.
-
Lady of the Lake: her diva numbers need headroom; set her gain with the full song.
-
Coconuts: Patsy’s coconuts are loud right next to the mic; place his mic on the side away from the hands.
